Scunthorpe Male Voice Choir Story

Formed in 1924, the Choir's early years were spent with musical festivals a priority, with the Choir winning almost fifty Firsts nationwide. During the war years the emphasis shifted with the Choir performing 'celebrity' concerts, many of which were broadcast.

More recently, the Choir's main aim has been to perform for local charities in order to raise much needed funds. We tend to sing in and around the Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire area, but as the 2012 Programme demonstrates, we also perform in venues across the country. Over the years we have assisted in raising many thousands of pounds for good causes.

The choir also has well established links with the North Georgia State University Choir in Georgia, USA. We enjoy visits from the University Choir every 4 years, the most recent being in the Spring of 2009. Hosted by Choir members, the youngsters visited York Minster, performed in Lincoln Cathedral and took part in a joint concert with us at The House. Brumby Wood Lane, Scunthorpe.

Our Annual Concert during October at The House is normally a splendid event which provides an opportunity for the Choir to invite a notable soloist or a young professional musician to give a special touch to the evening.

On a more practical basis, we are fortunate enough to have the continued support of The Lord St Oswald as Patron of the Choir. Having succeeded his Father, this is a position he has held for several years. We are also very thankful for the support of our two accompanists, Margaret and Anne and for Maggie, our Librarian.

The choir also has a thriving ladies section who's programme includes: regular supper evenings, participation at the BBQ and other events. Their support is much appreciated, particularly with the orgnisation of tickets and posters.

Do you have the SMVC Factor?

We are always keen to see new talent in the Choir. Anyone who would like to join is welcome to come along on a Thursday evening at 7 pm at The Church of the Resurrection, Mirfield Road, Scunthorpe, where he will be assured of a warm welcome.

Since we don't use copies, it is not a requirement to be able to read music. If you join, you will be placed in the appropriate section within the Choir and along with the other members will learn the pieces off by heart.
